Our open letter to the Prime Minister
We鈥檙e calling for rewilding to be at the heart of Britain鈥檚 response to wildfires, drought, flooding and extreme weather.
Dear Prime Minister,
We must Rewild to Recover
After a summer of heatwaves, drought and devastating wildfires, Britain is once again facing the threat of flooding and potential food shortages. These aren鈥檛 separate crises. They are symptoms of a changing climate and broken landscapes that have lost their ability to hold water and protect us all.
In rewilding lies one of our most hopeful solutions to the climate and nature emergencies.
We need to stop bouncing from crisis to crisis and start investing in long-term protection. Experts at the Climate Change Committee say billions more in funding is needed to help Britain adapt before it鈥檚 too late.
I鈥檓 calling on you today to create a major new Climate Shock Fund. This money should go directly to making Britain more resilient to floods, fires, water shortages and days of extreme heat.
Nature and wilder landscapes are our first line of defence against extreme weather. We need significant investment in making Britain wetter, woodier and wilder.
When we rewet drained peatlands and welcome beavers back to shape wetlands, water stays where it belongs. When we allow rivers to follow their natural course and reconnect with their floodplains, we create a landscape that absorbs, stores and slows the flow of water. When we expand our native woodlands and restore their bond with wild, grazing animals, we help our soils hold onto water and weave a rich tapestry of habitats that buffers against flood, fire and drought.
Let鈥檚 give nature the space it needs to help us鈥夆斺塧nd itself.
We must Rewild to Recover. Please create a Climate Shock Fund and put nature at the heart of creating a safer, more resilient Britain.
Signed,
