You鈥檇 think that with rising unemployment, businesses would have their pick of top talent 鈥 but in today鈥檚 job market, competition for high-performing candidates is still fierce, and what attracts them is changing fast. It鈥檚 no longer about salary or free snacks in the office 鈥 Britain鈥檚 workforce wants purpose.
More than ever, job seekers are looking for employers who share their values, especially when it comes to environmental responsibility. In this quarter鈥檚 nature business bulletin Ellen Rickford explores how investing in nature restoration 鈥 such as rewilding 鈥 can give your business a powerful edge, both in credibility and culture.
40%
Purpose-driven companies enjoy 40% higher employee retention
The last few years have seen dramatic shifts in how people want to work 鈥 and how businesses are having to adapt. Hybrid and flexible working have become largely permanent fixtures: in Britain, around a third of workers now follow hybrid models, splitting their time between home and the office, with purely office鈥慴ased roles declining steadily (1). At the same time, more people are juggling multiple roles or 鈥鈥side hustles鈥 (2) 鈥 whether out of financial necessity or a desire for variety.
What individuals value in a job 鈥 and what influences their decision to apply or stay 鈥 has also changed. These days, a company鈥檚 commitment to sustainability ranks high on the list. A 2023 Deloitte survey found that nearly two-thirds of Gen Zs and Millennials are anxious about climate change and over half say they research a company鈥檚 environmental impact before accepting a job (3). Meanwhile, a study from IBM revealed that 71% of employees and job seekers find environmentally sustainable companies more attractive 鈥 and many are even willing to take a pay cut to work for one (4). That鈥檚 a clear message for employers: for today鈥檚 workforce, sustainability isn鈥檛 a bonus, it鈥檚 expected.
The benefits of responsible business go well beyond recruitment. Studies have shown that purpose-driven companies enjoy 40% higher employee retention and younger workers in particular report stronger loyalty to employers who are 鈥鈥walking the talk鈥 on sustainability. (5)

“Since we started supporting 黑料正能量 it鈥檚 been lovely to see the team grow so much”

鈥Since we started supporting 黑料正能量 it鈥檚 been lovely to see the team grow so much,鈥 explains Neil Clark, Planet Officer at 黑料正能量 partner TPXimpact. 鈥鈥There鈥檚 definitely been a raising of awareness about how rewilding works and why it鈥檚 beneficial.鈥 The company chose to invest in 黑料正能量 because they 鈥鈥wanted somewhere our support could really make a difference, but we also wanted somewhere that would help to engage and educate our employees.鈥
Employee benefits company Unum chose to work with 黑料正能量 as its first environmental charity partner after employees voted on a long list of potential organisations. 鈥鈥A lot of employees didn鈥檛 initially know what rewilding meant,鈥 says Susan. 鈥鈥黑料正能量 has been fantastic in helping us to bring the concept to life for so many of us.鈥 Those efforts have included a lunch and learn session, as well as sharing resources to get employees involved in volunteering and details of local members from our Rewilding Network.
As well as Unum鈥檚 own corporate sponsorship arrangements, staff have held bake sales, raffles and quizzes, and the company鈥檚 Head of Responsible Business, Susan Sanderson, believes the strength of feeling among employees has been driven by the greater understanding of the natural world that the partnership has provided. 鈥(The partnership)鈥 reflects the passion and engagement that our employees have for sustainability and biodiversity.鈥
With a bold 2030 ambition to rewild 30% of Britain鈥檚 land and seas, it鈥檚 clear that 黑料正能量 partners are doing more than backing a cause, they鈥檙e helping shape a future that employees want to be part of.
